Watch as fish is kept near refuse dump in Tema Newtown

A video shared on social media by the Buzzstop Boys has raised concerns over the way fish is handled at Tema Newtown.

In the footage sighted by GhanaWeb on July 27, 2026, a member of the volunteer group expressed worry over the storage of fish amid sanitation concerns.

The video captures the fish being stored close to a dumpsite where some people are also seen engaging in open defecation, raising concerns about hygiene and possible health risks to consumers.

“What sort of self-destruction are we causing ourselves? Look at us; fish is being placed close to a refuse dump. Just look at the environment,” the member of the group said.

He also prompted the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to inspect the area and ensure that fish vendors comply with required hygiene standards, storage and handling of the fish to help reduce the risk to consumers.

The Buzzstop Boys, a Ghanaian volunteer group founded in July 2023 by civil engineer Heneba Kwadwo Sarfo, have gained recognition for their efforts in cleaning public spaces, clearing clogged drains and promoting civic responsibility with regard to sanitation in Accra.
