SA Repatriation: About 200 evacuees arrive at Accra International Airport

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has indicated that the second phase of Ghana’s repatriation exercise from South Africa is underway, with about 1,000 Ghanaians expected to return voluntarily.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, July 27, 2026, Ablakwa said the latest phase of the evacuation began on Sunday, July 26, following renewed xenophobic att@cks.

“The second phase of the evacuation exercise commenced on Sunday, July 26, and is expected to facilitate the voluntary return of about 1,000 Ghanaians,” he said.

He disclosed that about 200 evacuees had already arrived at Accra International Airport, while another group is expected in Accra on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

“We are coordinating this exercise through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, working with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria, relevant ministries, departments and agencies, as well as our international partners,” Ablakwa stated.

The minister added that diplomatic engagement with South African authorities is ongoing to ensure the repatriation process remains orderly, safe and dignified.

“We continue to engage the South African authorities through diplomatic channels, and we appreciate the cooperation they have extended to Ghana throughout this exercise,” he said.
