Journalist clashes with Kwadwo Nsafoah on live TV over Dr Bawumia

A senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, clashed with Media General journalist Berlinda Addardey, also known as Berla Mundi, over discussion on the alleged attempts by the government to privatise the state metal smelting firm, Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO).

The disagreement stemmed from Nsafoah's explanation of how the previous government handled the matter.

Addardey then pressed him on why former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia could not resolve the issue while in office, given the explanations offered by Nsafoah.

"Dr Bawumia was leader going into the 2024 elections. He had brilliant ideas because he put up a team to help him with it. The president [former president Akufo-Addo] at the time also had his own team to advise him. That is why we say that let Dr Bawumia be president and some of us will advise him,” he said.

Following his remarks, another panellist, Ramzu Inusah of the United Party, weighed in on the matter, criticising Dr Bawumia.

“Listening to Kwadwo Nsafoah this morning reference Dr Bawumia, I feel scandalised,” he said

Visibly displeased by the comment, Nsafoah interrupted his speech, saying: “My brother, let’s stop that thing that you guys do. You’re always accusing Bawumia; let’s stop that.”

As he continued to insist, Addardey intervened and urged him (Nsafoah) to allow Inusah to complete his submission.

“Kwadwo, allow him to make his point, and when he’s done, you make your point too. You don’t tell him where to start from,” she said.

Nsafoah still retorted, "Berla, they should stop this! This thing that UP does is not right. We are discussing VALCO. You don't start by saying Dr Bawumia is scandalous. Ghanaians are watching!"

When the interruptions persisted, she exclaimed: “You too stop it at this point! Allow him to make his point.”

Eventually, calm was restored to allow for the discussion to continue.

The exchanges follow protests by VALCO workers and the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), who have petitioned President John Dramani Mahama over allegations that the government was planning to transfer majority stake in the company to a private investor.
