The United States Embassy in Ghana has reminded US citizens who hold dual nationality that they must use a valid US passport when entering or leaving the United States of America.

In a post shared on its X page on July 29, 2026, the embassy said the requirement applies to all US citizens, including children, who also hold another nationality.

“US citizens are REQUIRED to enter and depart the United States on a US passport,” the embassy stated.

It further cautioned dual nationals against using their foreign passports to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), noting that the US Department of Homeland Security routinely denies or cancels such applications.

The embassy advised US citizens living abroad who intend to travel to the United States to ensure they have a valid US passport before making travel arrangements.

“If your US passport is expired or expires soon, renew before your trip,” it added.

It reminded travellers that passports should generally be valid for at least six months after the date of entry into a foreign country.
