'We should all be happy' - Nyaho-Tamakloe reacts to Supreme Court ruling on delegates system

Founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has welcomed the Supreme Court’s landmark decision declaring the delegate system used by political parties to elect presidential and parliamentary candidates unconstitutional.

Reacting to the judgment after the court ruling on July 29, 2026, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe described the ruling as a significant step toward strengthening democracy in Ghana.

“If this nation really wants a meritorious democracy, then we should all be happy; if not, our democracy will get nowhere,” he said.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe noted that Ghana’s democracy can only thrive when citizens and party members are given meaningful opportunities to participate in decision-making processes.

He emphasised the importance of safeguarding democratic principles for future generations.

The Supreme Court, in a 5-2 majority ruling, directed all political parties to adopt a more inclusive electoral process that allows every member in good standing to participate in the election of presidential and parliamentary candidates.

Political parties have been given one year to comply with the directive.

The judgment effectively abolishes the long-standing delegate system under which only selected delegates were permitted to vote in presidential and parliamentary primaries on behalf of the wider party membership.

According to the court, political parties must establish mechanisms that ensure broader participation in the selection of candidates, bringing their internal electoral processes into conformity with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution.
