Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu's lawyer speaks after Court of Appeal acquittal

Enoch Deegbe, lead counsel for former MASLOC CEO, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, says the defence’s argument that the charges against his client were defective was a key factor in the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge her.

Speaking to the media after the court’s ruling on Thursday, July 30, 2026, Deegbe expressed satisfaction with the outcome, saying the appellate court had agreed with the submissions made by the defence team.

“Firstly, let me seize the opportunity to thank my Lords for agreeing with us, in fact, for agreeing with our submissions. So, we thank my Lords for their erudite reasoning,” he said.

He, however, said he would wait for the full judgement before making detailed comments on the court’s reasoning.

“My Lords have said that the judgement would be ready by close of today, so when we get copies of the judgement, then we can peruse it and make comments subsequently,” he added.

Deegbe explained that the appeal was built mainly around three grounds, with the first being that the charges brought against Tamakloe-Attionu were defective.

“In terms of strategy, we had come essentially on two main grounds: the fact that the charge itself was defective and then, secondly, that there was no proper prima facie determination against our client. And then, of course, we also attacked the judgement itself,” he stated.

According to him, although the Court of Appeal only read its conclusion on the decision, it appeared to have hinged on the defence’s argument regarding the defective charges.

“As you may have already heard, the court only read their conclusion and they only brought on the first leg of our submission, which was the defective charge,” he said.

The Court of Appeal has unanimously acquitted and discharged Tamakloe-Attionu, overturning her 2024 conviction and 10-year prison sentence.

In its 94-page judgement, the appellate court held that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against her beyond reasonable doubt and found that the trial court had lost sight of the constitutional presumption of innocence.

The court also criticised aspects of the prosecution’s handling of the case.
