What Obiri Boahen said about the future of Ghana

Private legal practitioner and former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Obiri Boahen, says he is deeply concerned about Ghana's future, arguing that decades of poor governance, corruption and unfulfilled political promises have left the country on an uncertain path.

According to a report by adomonline.com on July 31, 2026, Boahen said he fears for the nation's future despite its vast natural resources and human capital.

"I always say that I am more than 60 years old, and at any moment I may go into my grave. But when I look at the things happening in this country, I weep for Ghana because the future looks bleak," he said.

Boahen said both the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have fallen short of the expectations they created while seeking political power.

"When I compare what the NDC promised and what the NPP promised, and I look at what some of their leaders have done in this country, I become very worried," he stated.

He stressed that his criticism was not targeted at a single political party, insisting that both major political parties share responsibility for the country's current challenges.

"It will be dishonest on my part to say that because I am an NPP member, my party has done nothing wrong. No. We must be honest with ourselves," he said.

Reflecting on Ghana's post-independence journey, Boahen lamented that the country's abundant resources, skilled workforce and strong institutions had not translated into the level of development many citizens had anticipated.

"When we gained independence, we had the resources, brilliant intellectuals, and strong institutions. We had every opportunity to become a prosperous nation, but look at where we are today," he lamented.

Boahen further criticised successive governments for failing to curb corruption and improve the delivery of essential public services.

"The NPP comes to power and leaves. The NDC comes to power and leaves. We keep rotating governments, yet corruption continues, public funds are stolen, our roads remain in poor condition, and hospitals still lack essential medicines," he said.

He warned that unless Ghana's political leadership embraces greater accountability and reforms its approach to governance, the country's prospects would remain bleak.
