President Mahama delivers new vehicles to retired military commanders

President John Dramani Mahama has fulfilled his pledge to provide replacement vehicles to the immediate past Chief of the Defence Staff, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah (Rtd) and former Service Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The retired military commanders received Toyota Land Cruisers after armoured vehicles previously allocated to them as part of their retirement benefits were withdrawn.

The handover took place at the General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces in Accra on Friday, July 31, 2026, with the current Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, presenting the vehicles on behalf of President Mahama.

The presentation follows a commitment made by President Mahama to provide alternative vehicles after the withdrawal of the armoured cars. The gesture was described as recognition of the service and sacrifices made by the retired commanders in contributing to Ghana's national security.

Speaking during the ceremony, Lt Gen Agyapong expressed appreciation to the former commanders for their contribution to the development of the GAF.

He also highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at improving military welfare, infrastructure and operational capacity.

Former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe (Rtd), who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked President Mahama for honouring his commitment.

The latest presentation forms part of broader government efforts to improve the welfare and operational capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Earlier in January 2026, President Mahama commissioned a fleet of vehicles for the GAF, including buses, pickup trucks and Land Cruisers, as part of efforts to modernise and improve mobility within the military.
