Watch rare 1957 footage that captures Ghanaians sharing views on Nkrumah after independence

Rare footage from 1957 has captured ordinary Ghanaians sharing their views on Dr Kwame Nkrumah shortly after Ghana gained independence.

The footage, recorded in the early days of the country’s independence, shows mixed reactions to Nkrumah’s leadership amongst a group of Ghanaian youths.

While some praised the then Prime Minister for what they described as improvements in the country, others expressed concerns about his leadership style.

One man said he was pleased with the progress Ghana was making under Nkrumah.

“Since we had our independence, the country is moving on with a big improvement. He's doing well for our country, and I like him very much,” he expressed.

Another person also expressed his support for Nkrumah and said he liked him.

“Oh, I like him the same. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, I like him,” he said with smiles all over his face.

However, not everyone interviewed had a positive view of the leader.

One person said he did not support Nkrumah because he feared he wanted to become a dictator.

“Oh, I don't like him because he wants to be a dictator,” he said.
