Afenyo-Markin (L) syas Justice Pwamang (R) wants to become Chief Justice
Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has alleged that Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang is positioning himself to become the next Chief Justice.
According to him, speaking on Asempa TV on August 17, 2026, he was aware that Justice Pwamang was lobbying behind the scenes to become the next Chief Justice after the exit of the current Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.
Justice Pwamang rebukes Barker-Vormawor
Afenyo-Markin made the allegation while questioning the role played by Justice Pwamang in the committee that investigated petitions against former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo that led to her removal.
“Today, as my Lord Baffoe-Bonnie is exiting, I am aware you are also lobbying to become the next Chief Justice,” he said.
The Effutu lawmaker claimed that the committee, chaired by Justice Pwamang, completed its report after hearing only one of three petitions filed against the former Chief Justice.
He questioned how Justice Pwamang would feel if a similar situation affected his own career.
“The report that even recommended her dismissal, they did not complete it. Three petitioners; they finished one petitioner, and they said they were done.
“My Lord Pwamang, who was the chair of that committee, I am asking him one question: My Lord, if they did that to you, how would you feel?” he questioned.
According to the Minority Leader, the other two petitions were still pending when the committee completed its work and recommended the removal of Justice Torkornoo.
Justice Pwamang to act as Chief Justice for 10 days
Afenyo-Markin reiterated that if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) returns to power, he expects Justice Torkornoo to be reinstated.
“When we went for the demonstration the last time, I said that when the NPP comes to power, I don't see why that woman will not be reinstated. She has to be reinstated,” he added.
