Gaddafi and Otumfuo during the Libyan leader’s visit to the Manhyia Palace in 2007
Former and the late Libyan leader, Muammar Al-Gaddafi, visited Kumasi on June 29, 2007, where he met the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace.
Gaddafi arrived in Kumasi around midnight after travelling from Côte d’Ivoire through the then Brong Ahafo Region.

Some residents of Kumasi braved the cold weather on the night of his arrival to welcome the Libyan leader as his convoy entered the city.
Many of those who gathered along the streets hoped to catch a glimpse of Gaddafi, but some were unable to see him personally despite waiting for several hours.
Others eventually left the streets disappointed.
The Libyan leader was also visited the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to commission a hostel project.
Gaddafi’s meeting with Otumfuo was significant because the two leaders had established a relationship before the Libyan leader’s visit to Kumasi.
In 2006, Otumfuo travelled to Libya for a 10-day goodwill and cultural visit at the invitation of Gaddafi.
The visit coincided with the 37th anniversary of the launch of Libya's Revolution.
During that visit, the Asantehene expressed confidence in Ghana-Libya relations and praised Libya’s confidence in Ghana, citing the country’s political stability, good governance, respect for human rights and economic growth.
Gaddafi subsequently visited Ghana in 2007, with his engagement with Otumfuo at Manhyia becoming one of the notable moments of his trip.
The relationship between Gaddafi and Otumfuo continued after the 2007 meeting.
