The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has sanctioned the management of the Akim Oda Government Hospital following findings of fraud and service abuse uncovered during an extensive audit.

According to a statement issued by the NHIA Corporate Affairs Directorate on August 18, 2026, Abdul Karim Naatogmah disclosed that the Authority’s aggressive pursuit of illegal charges in hospitals across the country led to the punitive action.

He further disclosed that the hospital was compelled to refund over GH¢300,000 after auditors confirmed irregularities in claims and service delivery.

The misconduct came to light after a whistleblower alerted the NHIA, prompting a compliance investigation.

"The bold decision was derived from the extensive audit findings of fraud and service abuse, under the Authority’s licensed Service Provider Agreement. In a related development, the Akim Oda Government Hospital management was sanctioned and compelled to refund GH¢312,413.51," the statement said.

"...The punitive action followed a clinical and compliance audit report, triggered by a patriotic whistleblower's tip-off," it added.

Abdul Karim Naatogmah further revealed that persistent extortions and illegal charges had eroded public trust in the National Health Insurance Scheme, leading to reduced membership renewals and discouraging new enrolments.

In response, the NHIA management convened an emergency meeting, which resulted in the suspension of three pharmaceutical companies.

"Persistent extortions and illegal charges at the credentialed hospitals severely reduced public trust in the NHIS, driving down membership renewals and discouraging new enrolments," he said.
