'It’s not yielding results’ - NPP's Ekua Amoakoh on government's fight against galamsey

Dr Ekua Amoakoh, Deputy Spokesperson for the 2028 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that the use of soldiers to fight illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, is not a new strategy and has not yielded results.

According to her, deploying soldiers to combat illegal mining is not a new strategy and should not be presented as a revolutionary approach to tackling the menace.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on August 18, 2026, Dr Amoakoh said the military has been used in previous efforts to fight galamsey.

“It’s not new, let’s not behave like it’s new, and it’s revolutionary, and that it’s yielding to some of your findings. It’s not yielding results", she stated.

She also disputed claims by the government that it has successfully reclaimed nine forest reserves.

"No, it is not right, those nine forests that they are saying it is a no-go area, it is not like that on the ground,” she insisted.

Her comments come amid renewed efforts by the government to intensify the fight against illegal mining.

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources was officially inaugurated on June 26, 2025, to coordinate efforts against illegal mining activities in the country.
