Watch as Rent Commissioner fumes over 'cubicle' rooms rented to students for GH¢2,000

Acting Rent Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, has expressed anger over the condition of rooms being rented to students of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani.

Opoku visited the facility, which appears to have been converted into a private hostel, as part of efforts to clamp down on what he described as illegal rent charges.

A video circulating on social media shows the rooms divided with wooden boards into very small spaces, raising concerns about the safety and comfort of students who live there.

According to the Acting Rent Commissioner, students are being charged as much as GH¢2,000 for accommodation at the facility despite its poor condition.

The rooms also appeared to have poor lighting, while one of the wooden bunk beds seen in the video appeared to be in bad condition.

The commissioner was then seen in the video, questioning a man believed to be connected to the facility about the condition of the rooms.

He further challenged the man over the amount being charged for the rooms, and went on to ask him whether he would allow his own child to sleep there.

“[You take] GH¢2,000 from students and you rent this rubbish you call a hostel? Look, where is the light? There is no light here. Everybody should see, there is no light here… is it fair? You are charging GH¢2,000; would you allow your child to sleep in a place like this?” Opoku asked.
