Six injured as Toyota Corolla plunges into Birim River

Six male occupants have sustained injuries after a Toyota Corolla plunged into the Birim River at Biremso on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, near Anyinasin Junction.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, and prompted a swift response from the Bunso Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

According to a GNFS statement issued on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, a distress call was received at 9:04 am, prompting a duty crew led by ADO II Dacosta Amankwah to proceed to the scene.

The crew arrived at 9:11 am and found a black Toyota Corolla with registration number GR 1425-18 submerged in the Birim River.

“The six occupants sustained injuries, while no fatalities were recorded,” the GNFS stated.

The occupants had been rescued from the vehicle by members of the public before the arrival of the firefighters and were subsequently conveyed to Hawa Saviour Memorial Hospital for medical attention.

The vehicle was completely damaged in the accident, although some personal belongings were recovered from it.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
