Organisers of the Ghana International Book Fair (GIBF) have officially launched the 23rd edition while urging Ghanaians to rediscover the power of books in shaping the nation’s future.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on August 20, 2026, Edward Yaw Udzu, Esq, Chairman of the Ghana International Book Fair, announced that the Fair will run from August 27–30, 2026, at the National Theatre, under the theme: “Transforming Ghana’s Future Through Books.”
According to him, the Fair is more than an annual gathering, describing it as a national movement to place books at the centre of Ghana’s cultural and educational transformation.
"The 23rd Ghana International Book Fair therefore comes as more than an annual gathering. It is an invitation to Ghana to rediscover the power of reading and the importance of knowledge in building the nation we desire," he said.
Udzu further highlighted the enduring importance of books as “vessels of knowledge, records of history and culture, and powerful instruments for shaping minds and changing lives.”
He also acknowledged challenges facing the industry, including rising production costs, piracy, and declining reading habits, but urged stakeholders to collaborate in building a stronger publishing ecosystem.
"The Ghana International Book Fair recognises that the publishing and book industry faces significant challenges, including the rising cost of production, piracy, limited financing, distribution difficulties and declining reading habits in some sections of society."
"However, these challenges also present an opportunity for stakeholders to work together to build a stronger, more innovative and sustainable book ecosystem," he added.
Udzu also disclosed that the event will bring together publishers, authors, booksellers, librarians, educators, policymakers, academics, students, and book lovers to exchange ideas, discover new publications, and celebrate Ghanaian literature.
"To young people across Ghana, the message is simple: read widely, think deeply and dream boldly. Your future may begin with the pages of a book."
He continued: "To publishers, authors, booksellers, librarians, educators, policymakers and all stakeholders in the book industry, the Fair provides a unique opportunity to strengthen collaboration and reaffirm our collective commitment to building a nation that reads, learns, creates and innovates."
