Former Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei‑Mensah, has explained that his decision not to openly support any candidate in the party’s internal elections is intended to enable him to remain a responsible elder.

According to him, the number of respected elders in the party continues to dwindle because many party members have chosen sides in the internal elections.

He said it was, therefore, important for him to stay away from the elections so that his views would remain respected and could help resolve issues within the party when they arise.

Simon Osei‑Mensah made the remarks in an interview on Accra-based OKAY FM.

“When the party issued guidelines for the party’s internal elections, I openly said that, aside from the flagbearership, I would not openly support any candidate. I have realised that the number of respected elders in the party keeps reducing, and I believe it is because of the elections.

“I decided not to support any candidate in the party’s internal elections because I have realised that when you do that, you are unable to objectively address issues in the party. This is because they will think that, because you supported one person against them, you cannot be objective. So, I decided that this time around, I will not support anyone,” he explained.
