A rare photograph has captured Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and his Egyptian wife, Fathia Halim Ritzk, on their wedding day in December 31, 1957.

Fathia, who later became Ghana’s First Lady, was reportedly a 26-year-old university student studying Arabic in Cairo when she married Dr Nkrumah. Their union reportedly came as a surprise to many.

The black-and-white photograph shows the newlyweds seated together and posing for the camera. Fathia is dressed in a white wedding gown and veil, while Dr Nkrumah sits beside her with a smile.

Family members and guests who attended the ceremony are also captured in the photograph.

Why Kwame Nkrumah's mother-in-law refused to bless her daughter's marriage

Seated to Fathia’s left is one of her relatives, while some of Dr Nkrumah’s relatives, dressed in Ghanaian kente, can also be seen in the picture.

Other guests, including some of Dr Nkrumah’s close associates and political allies, are seen standing behind the couple.

FLASHBACK: How a beautiful and naive young Egyptian woman became Nkrumah's wife

Dr Kwame Nkrumah and Fathia married at Christiansborg Castle in Accra on the evening of December 31, 1957, shortly after her arrival in Ghana.
