Labour expert speaks on Afenyo‑Markin-GoldBod 'loss' controversy

The Secretary‑General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has urged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain focused and resist what he described as attempts by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to distract the government from delivering on its mandate.

Koomson said sustained attacks by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin on the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and its Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, should be seen as part of a broader political strategy aimed at undermining the NDC administration.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, August 22, 2026, he said; “The target of Afenyo‑Markin is not Sammy Gyamfi. The target is to run down the NDC."

His comments come amid growing controversy over the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP), with the Minority in Parliament demanding greater accountability for reported losses.

The IMF’s August 2026 report indicated that the Bank of Ghana’s DGPP recorded losses of more than US$1.7 billion in 2025, equivalent to about 1.5% of Ghana’s GDP.

The Minority has argued that GoldBod should account for losses linked to the programme rather than claiming credit for its gains.

However, GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi has rejected suggestions that the institution itself incurred the reported losses, insisting the figures should not be attributed to GoldBod.

Koomson cautioned the NDC to be vigilant and avoid giving the opposition an opportunity to regain political ground through what he called “unnecessary distractions.”
