I will campaign for Dede Ayew to become GFA President – Mikel Obi

Former Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Obi has vowed to make the necessary efforts to ensure that former Black Stars captain André Dede Ayew assumes the presidency of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

According to him, Ayew has acquired the requisite experience to manage the affairs of football in Ghana and rightly deserves the role.

The former Chelsea midfielder promised to embark on a rigorous campaign to ensure Ayew is recognized by football administrators and officials, winning their support to be elected as GFA President.

“I am going to campaign for André Ayew to become GFA President,” Mikel Obi said during the Obi One Podcast hosted in Accra, Ghana, on August 23, 2026.

Meanwhile, Ayew has acknowledged hearing calls from some Ghanaians for him to contest the position but has stated that it is not his current priority.

The former Ghana captain has increased his visibility in the local sporting landscape through appearances at football-related events and support for teams.

Ayew is currently a free agent after spending the 2025/26 season with Dutch club NAC Breda.

The 36-year-old has enjoyed a lengthy international and club career, captaining the Black Stars and representing clubs in France, England, Turkey, and Qatar, among others.
