Ayitey Powers remanded for one week over alleged death threat

Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been remanded into police custody for one week following his arrest over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

Ayitey Powers appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a day after his arrest by the Accra Regional Police Command.

His arrest was linked to a video circulating on social media in which he is alleged to have made threatening comments against the NSA boss.

The court subsequently ordered that he remain in custody as police continue investigations into the matter. He is scheduled to appear again on September 2, 2026.

The development follows a demand by the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) for police action against the former boxer. The committee had earlier described the alleged comments as serious and unacceptable, urging the relevant authorities to investigate and prosecute if the allegations are established.

The latest case also adds to a long-running dispute between Ayitey Powers and the NSA.

The former boxer has previously accused the authority of causing him significant financial losses after a boxing event organised by his promotional outfit was cancelled in September 2025.

Powers has claimed that the cancellation cost him nearly $100,000 and has publicly traded accusations with NSA officials over the issue.

Despite the tension, the two sides appeared to have made efforts to ease their differences in May 2026, when they were seen publicly engaging in what appeared to be a reconciliation.
