He is the modern Kante - Thomas-Asante hails Caleb Yirenkyi

Ghana forward Brandon Thomas-Asante has hailed his club teammate Caleb Yirenkyi as the “modern N’Golo Kante”, praising the midfielder for his qualities both on and off the pitch.

Talking to Premier League TV, Thomas-Asante revealed that Yirenkyi's style of play and character remind him of the former France international, who built a reputation as one of football's most effective midfielders through his tireless work rate, composure and ability to influence games without seeking the spotlight.

“I call him the modern N’Golo Kante. He’s so quiet and keeps himself to himself. However, he is a really confident character. He is quietly confident,” Thomas-Asante said.

The forward also reflected on Yirenkyi's memorable winner against Panama at the 2026 World Cup, revealing how much the moment meant to him.

Thomas-Asante, who assisted the winner, was on the opposite side of the pitch when Yirenkyi struck the decisive goal late in the game.

“When the ball hit the back of the net, he ran off and I was on the other side, and I couldn’t believe we had scored this late in the game,” he said.

He said seeing Yirenkyi celebrate with his teammates made the moment even more special, particularly because of the affection he has for the midfielder.

“There were two groups of huddles celebrating. I remember I was looking at Caleb and I was so pleased for him. That whole feeling resonated with me and I enjoyed that,” Thomas-Asante added.
