'Completely unprofessional' - KT Hammond blasts OSP for naming Kwabena Donkor in AKSA scandal

KT Hammond, former Adansi Asokwa Member of Parliament and legal representative for former Power Minister Dr Kwabena Donkor, has taken issue with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over its decision to publicly name his client as a person of interest in the Ghanaian aspect of the Asante Kwaku Berko bribery case.

According to KT Hammond, the OSP’s approach is inappropriate and unprofessional, insisting that investigators should directly invite individuals they wish to question instead of identifying them publicly during press briefings.

Speaking on Citi FM on August 26, 2026, he said neither he nor his client had received any communication from the OSP concerning the investigation.

“What I deprecate is this habit of announcements on the radio and the press conferences. It’s completely unprofessional. I, the lawyer, haven’t been contacted. I’m not sure my client has been contacted,” he said.

KT Hammond explained that should investigators require information from his client, they should formally invite him to assist with their inquiries, adding that his client would make himself available.

He further disagreed with the argument that the public interest warranted the naming of the individuals, maintaining that people under investigation still have legal and constitutional protections.

The lawyer’s comments come after the OSP named five persons as persons of interest in its investigation into the Ghanaian dimension of the bribery case involving former Goldman Sachs banker and former Tema Oil Refinery Managing Director, Asante Kwaku Berko.

The other individuals identified by the OSP are Francis Walkson Kwasi Dzafa, a former Technical Adviser to the Minister of Power; Solomon Adjetey Sowah, a Deputy Director; Lyndon Nii Mettle, Director of Tricorp Group Limited; and Baffour Ankomah Brobbey, an employee of Tricorp Group Limited.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has, however, clarified that being identified as a person of interest does not automatically make the individuals suspects or mean they have been found guilty of any wrongdoing.

The investigation comes after Asante Kwaku Berko was convicted by a federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, on August 6, 2026, for his role in a bribery scheme involving more than US$1 million paid to Ghanaian officials in relation to the development and financing of a power plant.

The OSP has indicated that its investigation is focused on the Ghanaian component of the case, particularly the circumstances surrounding the alleged payments and whether any offences were committed under Ghanaian law.

KT Hammond, however, maintained that any attempt to engage his client should be done through established investigative procedures rather than through public announcements in the media.
