List of roads to be affected by major drainage works on Kaneshie Road

The government, on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, announced major drainage construction works that will affect traffic on the Kaneshie-Mallam Road for several months.

The construction is being undertaken under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project and forms part of the government’s efforts to address perennial flooding in Accra.

Addressing the media on the project on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, the Project Coordinator of the GARID Project, Dr Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, said the works are expected to cause temporary traffic restrictions and diversions.

He said the briefing was intended to ensure that the general public has accurate information about the construction to enable motorists and commuters to plan their movements and minimise inconvenience.

He explained that the works mainly involve the construction of a double-cell underground rectangular stormwater drain from Pamplom Junction to First Light Junction, along the Dr Busia Highway within the Kaneshie enclave.

“The drain to be constructed measures approximately 10 metres wide, and it runs for 1.5 kilometres. It will replace the existing 1.2-metre-diameter, two-number pipes that currently serve the enclave. On one end, it will connect to the recently completed section within the Accra Academy campus, and on the other end, connect to the drain at Pamplom Junction,” he said.

“The works will span from Pamplom Junction all the way to First Light, and the work will be done in three phases,” he added.

He subsequently provided details of the affected roads and alternative routes to be used during the periods when sections of the roads would be closed.

The alternative routes form part of a comprehensive traffic management plan developed by the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources and the Department of Urban Roads to ensure that traffic continues to flow safely.

The traffic management plan, which will be implemented in three phases, is as follows:

Phase One – September 7, 2026, to the end of November 2026

When will the closed roads be reopened?

Pamplom Junction is expected to be reopened in the first week of December 2026.

Once reopened, motorists approaching from the affected corridors will be able to make a right turn at Pamplom Junction and connect to the designated alternative routes towards First Light Junction.

However, the remaining westbound section of the Dr Busia Highway, from Kaneshie Station to First Light, will remain closed until August 2027 to allow construction of the underground drains to continue.

Phase Two – September 2027 to the end of October 2027

Alternative routes

Motorists will be diverted through the Obechebi Interchange to Oblogo Traffic Light, opposite the ICGC Christ Temple, then to Mataheko Road before reconnecting to First Light Junction.
