Residents of Tarkwa protest in support of Gold Fields' mining lease renewal

Assembly Member for New Atuabo, John Nsoh, has appealed to the government to renew Gold Fields' mining lease, saying the company's exit could negatively affect the development of Tarkwa.

According to him, Gold Fields has contributed to several infrastructure and community development projects in Tarkwa-Nsuaem over the years.

Speaking during a peaceful demonstration by the youth and residents of Tarkwa on Thursday, August 27, 2026, Nsoh said the company had supported several communities, including New Atuabo.

“As an Assembly Member, I know much about what Gold Fields has done for New Atuabo community, as well as the whole of Tarkwa-Nsuaem,” he said.

“Let’s look at the T&A Park, the Bogoso Junction to Damang road, the road from Budo City to Bogoso Junction, and many others. All of these were done by Gold Fields,” he added.

He warned that Tarkwa could lose important development support if the company's mining lease was not renewed when it expires in April 2027.

“If the government does not renew their lease at Tarkwa, it will affect Tarkwa. We are pleading with the government. Gold Fields is the light of Tarkwa, and if Gold Fields goes off now, Tarkwa will go off as well,” Nsoh said.

The youth and residents marched through the principal streets of the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality with placards in support of the company.

Another demonstrator, John Davies, said Gold Fields had made a greater impact on the municipality than other mining companies operating in the area.

“We have three mining companies here in Tarkwa, and weighing all three and the projects they have undertaken, Gold Fields stands tall. So, I think the government should give them the lease to continue the work,” he said.

The demonstrators said the company had contributed to education, healthcare, infrastructure, skills training and local economic empowerment.

They appealed to the government to renew Gold Fields' mining lease, arguing that the company's continued operations would help protect jobs and support economic growth in Tarkwa and nearby communities.
