Parliament approves three Supreme Court nominees amid Minority boycott

Parliament has approved the nominations of three individuals to the Supreme Court.

The nominees, Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah, Justice Edward Amoako Asante and private legal practitioner Anthony Forson Jnr, a former President of the Ghana Bar Association were all recommended by the Appointments Committee and subsequently endorsed by the House, despite a dramatic boycott of the vetting process by the Minority Caucus.

The Minority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, staged a walkout during the vetting, insisting that the process was being rushed and did not allow sufficient time for public scrutiny.

Afenyo-Markin emphasised that their objection was procedural rather than personal, noting that the nominees' qualifications were not in question.

He argued that no urgent vacancies existed on the Supreme Court to justify the expedited timeline.

Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor dismissed the Minority’s concerns, directing that the vetting proceed. With the Minority absent, the Majority continued the process and endorsed the nominees.
