Parliament has given approval to the nominations of Mahama Ayariga and Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings to serve as Ministers for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and Environment, Science and Technology, respectively.

The approval came after both nominees appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, 2026, for scrutiny as part of the constitutional process for ministerial appointments.

During the vetting, the two nominees responded to questions from members of the Committee on their professional backgrounds, experience, competence and plans for their respective ministries.

Mahama Ayariga, a former Majority Leader and Chairman of Parliament’s Business Committee, was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama to take charge of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

His new portfolio places him at the centre of government’s efforts to strengthen local governance, improve relations with traditional authorities and address matters relating to religious affairs.

Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, on the other hand, was nominated to lead the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology.

She is expected to oversee government policies and programmes relating to environmental protection, scientific research, technological advancement and efforts to address the country’s environmental challenges.

Following their vetting, the Appointments Committee recommended both nominees for approval, leading to their subsequent endorsement by Parliament.
