'General Mosquito': Tracing Asiedu Nketiah's political journey from 1992

An old photograph of National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, popularly known as “General Mosquito,” campaigning for his first attempt to enter Parliament has resurfaced online, taking Ghanaians back to the early days of his political career.

The photograph captures Asiedu Nketiah during his campaign for the Wenchi West parliamentary seat ahead of the 1992 elections, when Ghana was preparing to return to constitutional democratic rule under the Fourth Republic.

More than three decades later, the image offers a striking glimpse of a much younger Asiedu Nketiah before he became one of the most recognisable figures in Ghanaian politics.

In a resurfaced photo sighted by GhanaWeb on August 29, 2026, the post detailed his journey to become a legislator and his contribution to grassroots mobilisation.

He had earlier been elected to represent Seikwa at the Wenchi District Assembly in 1989 and subsequently served on the Consultative Assembly that helped draft Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

When parliamentary elections were held on December 29, 1992, Asiedu Nketiah won the Wenchi West seat on the NDC ticket and entered the First Parliament of the Fourth Republic, which was inaugurated in January 1993.

He would go on to represent the constituency for 12 years, winning re-election in 1996 and 2000 before leaving Parliament in 2004.

During his parliamentary career, he served on several major committees and later became Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture in charge of Crops.

His political career later took an even bigger turn when he became NDC General Secretary in 2005, a position he held for 17 years before being elected National Chairman in 2022.

Speculations are however rife that Johnson Asiedu Nketiah is eyeing flagbearship position of the ruling NDC.
