Petrol, diesel and LPG prices projected to rise from September 1

Ghanaian motorists and households could pay more for fuel from Tuesday, September 1, 2026, as petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are expected to record price increases.

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC) projects that petrol could rise to GH¢16.21 per litre, representing a 5% increase from the current average price of GH¢15.43.

Diesel is also expected to increase to about GH¢17.61 per litre, from GH¢17.17, while LPG could rise to approximately GH¢14.19 per kilogramme, according to figures cited by MyJoyOnline.

The projected increases come despite a stronger Ghana cedi and a slight decline in global crude oil prices.

COPEC said the cedi appreciated by about 2.39% during the pricing window, moving from GH¢11.80 to GH¢11.5166 to the US dollar.

Global crude oil prices also declined from $90.41 to $89.30 per barrel during the period.

However, the gains from the stronger cedi and lower crude oil prices have been outweighed by increases in the international prices of refined petroleum products.

Petrol faces biggest pressure

The biggest pressure is on petrol, with COPEC indicating that its international Free-On-Board (FOB) price increased by about 10%, from $1,033.15 to $1,136.50 per metric tonne.

For consumers, the projected increase could translate into higher transport and fuel costs from the beginning of September, although actual pump prices will depend on the prices set by individual Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

Government raises GH¢6.5 billion as T-Bill demand remains strong

COPEC has appealed to the government to extend its fuel subsidy intervention beyond August to help cushion consumers against the expected increases.

It has also urged OMCs to maintain the current ex-pump price of diesel to minimise the impact of the projected increases.

If the projections materialise, motorists and LPG users could face additional pressure on their household and transportation budgets as the new pricing window begins.
