Dr Zanetor pledges decisive action to protect Ghana’s environment

The Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, has pledged to take decisive action to protect Ghana’s environment and ensure the sustainable management of the country’s natural resources.

She said her appointment by President John Dramani Mahama comes with a deep sense of responsibility and a commitment to serve the country with integrity, humility and purpose.

In a Facebook post shared on August 31, 2026, Dr Agyemang-Rawlings expressed gratitude to President Mahama for the confidence reposed in her and said she did not take the responsibility lightly.

She identified climate change, environmental degradation, illegal mining, waste management, pollution and the sustainable use of natural resources among the major challenges requiring urgent attention.

“The challenges before us are significant. Managing climate change, environmental degradation, illegal mining, waste management, pollution and the sustainable use of our natural resources require courage, innovation, collaboration and above all, decisive action,” she indicated.

Dr Agyemang-Rawlings said Ghana’s environment must be treated as an inheritance that belongs not only to the present generation but also to generations yet unborn.

“I see our environment not as a resource to exploit, but as an inheritance entrusted to our care,” she stated.

She also pledged to promote science, technology and innovation as key drivers of national development, saying research must move beyond academia into practical partnerships involving government, the private sector, civil society, communities and universities.

According to her, such partnerships could help create jobs, strengthen industry, improve agriculture and healthcare, and make Ghana’s economy more innovative and competitive.

She further pledged to work with scientists, researchers, innovators, environmentalists, businesses and communities to protect the country’s natural resources while responsibly unlocking their potential.

“I will listen. I will learn and I will engage, working with the many talented Ghanaians who believe in our country’s potential,” she said.

Dr Agyemang-Rawlings called on Ghanaians to support her with their prayers, ideas and partnership as she works to protect the environment, advance science, harness technology and contribute to building a sustainable and prosperous Ghana.

“This is bigger than any one individual. It is about the Ghana we leave behind, and I am ready to serve,” she noted.
