Here is when Weija Dam spillage will resume

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has directed residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate ahead of planned spillage from the dam, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

The directive follows a rise in the dam’s water level to 45.2 feet, close to its 46-foot safety threshold, following heavy rains upstream and continued rainfall within the Densu River catchment and its tributaries.

In a statement dated September 6, 2026, GWL said the decision to commence spillage was a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding the dam and preventing a potentially dangerous situation.

“All residents living downstream of the dam are directed to evacuate the area before any eventuality,” the company said.

Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, as well as surrounding areas.

GWL urged residents in the affected communities to remain alert, comply with official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could expose them to danger.

The utility also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Assembly, traditional authorities, assembly members, resident associations and other relevant stakeholders to take precautionary measures and prepare for the evacuation.

GWL said it was closely monitoring the situation and would continue to provide updates, stressing that the safety of residents remained its priority and that public cooperation was essential.
