Tomato prices could fall sharply in the coming weeks as farmers begin harvesting more tomatoes, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture John Dumelo has announced.

The increased supply is expected to bring more tomatoes to the market and ease the high prices consumers are currently paying.

“The prices of tomatoes should see a sharp decline in the coming weeks as Ghanaian farmers have started harvesting,” Dumelo stated.

In a Facebook post on September 7, 2026, sighted by GhanaWeb, he said the government is also preparing for large-scale tomato farming during the dry season from December 2026 to June 2027 to prevent shortages next year.

Dumelo said land has been cleared in parts of northern Ghana, with tomato seedlings expected to be planted from October.

The government has also provided farmers with solar-powered boreholes and irrigation equipment to support farming during the dry season.

The initiative is aimed at increasing tomato production throughout the year and reducing the seasonal shortages that often drive up prices.

Tomato prices have risen sharply in recent months, with traders attributing the shortage to low rainfall in major tomato-growing areas.

Dumelo noted that the dry-season farming programme would help increase supply next year and reduce the likelihood of another sharp rise in tomato prices.
