Wontumi campaign throws support behind John Boadu for NPP national chairman

The campaign team of former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has endorsed John Boadu’s bid to become the party’s next National Chairman.

The decision follows a meeting between the leadership of the Wontumi Campaign and Wontumi at the facility in Nsawam where he is currently being held on Friday, September 4, 2026.

In a statement dated September 8, 2026, the campaign said the endorsement was reached after extensive consultations with grassroots supporters, constituency actors, party elders and other stakeholders across the country.

“This is not a casual endorsement, nor a decision born of convenience or political pressure. It is a deliberate and strategic choice, guided by what we believe serves the best interest of the New Patriotic Party and its future,” the statement said.

The campaign explained that its decision was informed by the need to consolidate the party’s strength, build bridges and unite its various factions ahead of the 2028 general elections.

It said Boadu’s institutional experience and knowledge of the party’s organisational structures, combined with the Wontumi Campaign’s extensive grassroots network, would provide the foundation for rebuilding the NPP.

“When grassroots strength meets institutional experience, and mobilisation is matched with organisation, the NPP becomes a formidable force for victory,” it stated.

The campaign further argued that John Boadu was best positioned among the aspirants to lead the party back to what it described as its “winning ways” and help build the political strength needed to return former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to the presidency in 2028.

According to the campaign, the NPP cannot afford to allow internal divisions and factionalism to weaken its preparations for the next election.

“There are moments in politics when leaders must choose between protecting their own corner and strengthening the entire house. We have chosen the house,” it said.

The campaign therefore called on members of the Wontumi Campaign, including regional and constituency structures, electoral-area coordinators, polling-station executives, communicators, volunteers and supporters, to immediately rally behind Boadu.

“Wherever you organised for Wontumi, organise for John Boadu. Wherever you mobilised for Wontumi, mobilise for John Boadu. Wherever you stood for Wontumi, stand for John Boadu,” the statement indicated.

The campaign stressed, however, that its endorsement should not be interpreted as an attack on other aspirants contesting the National Chairmanship position.

It said every party member had the right to support a candidate of their choice and urged contestants to maintain civility throughout the internal election.

“Internal democracy must never become internal warfare,” the campaign said, adding that the contest should ultimately produce “a stronger NPP, not a wounded one.”

The Wontumi Campaign said it was now ready to work with the John Boadu Campaign by bringing its grassroots structures, organisational experience and political mobilisation to the partnership.

It expressed confidence that the alliance would strengthen the NPP’s efforts to reorganise the party and prepare it for the 2028 elections.
