KATH praises Ghana Medical Trust Fund over GH¢4m equipment donation

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has praised the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) for its significant interventions at the hospital, saying the impact of the Fund in just one year feels like that of an institution that has existed for 70 years.

The commendation followed the handover of medical equipment and consumables worth more than GH¢4 million to KATH to support specialised healthcare delivery.

The donation includes a fully equipped Olympus endoscopy tower for gastroscopy and colonoscopy, two jaundice meters, as well as respiratory, oxygen therapy and anaesthesia consumables.

The items formed part of a larger consignment donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund by Lifecare Technology Ghana.

Speaking at the presentation, Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, said the donation was part of activities marking the Fund’s first anniversary.

She said the intervention reflects the Fund’s commitment to providing health facilities with the equipment they need to improve patient care and save lives.

“We have done a lot for Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and we are ready to do more,” she said.

According to her, the equipment was allocated to KATH following the hospital’s urgent need for an endoscopy system and other essential consumables.

She also commended the hospital’s Board, Chief Executive Officer, management and staff for their support for the Trust Fund since it began operations.

For KATH, the donation comes as a major financial relief at a time when the hospital was preparing to replace an ageing endoscopy machine.

Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, disclosed that the hospital’s existing endoscopy machine is more than 10 years old and management had been considering spending about GH¢800,000 to acquire a replacement.

He said the donation would allow the hospital to redirect funds earmarked for the replacement into other critical areas of healthcare delivery.

“This has really reduced my blood pressure because the monies we were going to spend on these essential items can now be channelled into other services to make sure we deliver premium services to Ghanaians we serve,” Dr Baidoo said.

Dr Baidoo also highlighted the cardiac intervention centre currently under construction as one of the most significant interventions KATH has received through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

He noted that despite KATH’s 70-year history, the hospital had never had such a facility.

According to him, the establishment of the Trust Fund has brought the long-awaited project within reach and could significantly strengthen specialised cardiac care at the hospital.

“The interventions the Trust Fund is providing make us feel you have been in existence for 70 years because your impact within just a year feels like you have been here forever,” he said.

The latest donation adds to a series of interventions undertaken by the Ghana Medical Trust Fund at KATH over the past year, including support for specialised medical equipment and the ongoing cardiac intervention centre.

For KATH, the interventions are helping to address longstanding gaps in specialised healthcare delivery while expanding the hospital’s capacity to provide critical services to patients.
