Passengers travelling from Tamale to Kumasi could be charged GH¢4,000
A Ghanaian traveller has expressed frustration over the high cost of domestic air travel after reportedly finding a one-way ticket from Accra to Tamale selling for as much as GH¢2,600.
The traveller, in a video shared on social media, questioned why passengers have to pay thousands of cedis to travel between cities in Ghana, arguing that the cost of domestic flights is becoming increasingly unaffordable.
According to her, she came across a one-way fare of about GH¢2,600 for the Accra-Tamale route, while another airline was reportedly charging approximately GH¢2,300 for the same journey.

She also raised concerns about fares on other domestic routes, claiming that passengers travelling from Tamale to Kumasi could be charged between GH¢4,000 and GH¢6,000 or even more for a one-way ticket.
“Something needs to be done about the domestic flight prices in Ghana,” she said, questioning why relatively short journeys within the country should attract such high fares.
The traveller further argued that the situation could make domestic air travel inaccessible to many Ghanaians who may need to move between the regions for business, work, education or other personal commitments.
She further compared Ghana's domestic airfares with the cost of flying between cities in the United States.
According to her, passengers in the US can sometimes secure round-trip tickets for journeys lasting between 60 and 90 minutes for about US$120 to US$220, with even cheaper fares available depending on the airline and booking period.
She said the comparison raises questions about the factors contributing to the relatively high cost of domestic air travel in Ghana.
“It’s not about you don’t have money or you’re not the target market,” she said, rejecting the argument that expensive domestic flights are simply a reflection of market conditions or the purchasing power of passengers.
Her comments have sparked renewed discussion about the affordability of air travel in Ghana, particularly for passengers who frequently travel between Accra and regional capitals.
Domestic air travel is often considered a faster alternative to road transport, especially for passengers travelling between Accra, Kumasi and Tamale.
The relatively short flight times can make air travel attractive to business travellers and others seeking to reduce the time spent on long road journeys.
However, the cost of tickets can be a major consideration for passengers, particularly when compared with the price of travelling by road.

Domestic airlines operating in Ghana, including Africa World Airlines and PassionAir, serve key routes connecting Accra with cities such as Kumasi and Tamale.
Flight times on these routes are generally below one hour, depending on the destination and prevailing operating conditions.
Airfares, however, are not fixed and can vary considerably depending on several factors, including the date of travel, demand, availability, booking period and season.
Passengers who book well in advance may sometimes find lower fares, while tickets purchased closer to the date of travel can be significantly more expensive.
The traveller's comments have since reignited calls for stakeholders in Ghana's aviation industry to examine the factors driving domestic airfares and consider ways of making air travel more accessible to a wider section of the population.
