President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is focused on building ten new stadia across the country to promote sporting activities.

According to him, the stadium project has been streamlined to ensure that the newly created regions, as well as other existing regions without such facilities, will benefit.

President Mahama indicated that the stadia will be equipped with football pitches, athletics tracks, and special courts for volleyball and other sporting disciplines.

Fix the old or build new? President Mahama faces stadium dilemma

Addressing the public during a trophy presentation at the presidency by Medeama SC and Nations FC on September 8, 2026, the president outlined the plans.

“And so, the Oti Region, Western North, Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah, Northeast, Upper East, and Upper West are going to get new stadiums. These will include football pitches, athletics tracks, and facilities for what we call the lesser sports—volleyball, basketball, and others,” he noted.

President Mahama also stated that plans are far advanced, with the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, beginning processes to release funds for the project.

He added that the Ho Sports Stadium will be rebuilt following the poor state of the existing facility.

“Ho has a sports stadium, but it’s run-down. And so, for Ho, the stadium is going to be refurbished and almost built afresh into a new facility. In this year’s budget, the Minister of Finance is allocating the building of ten new stadiums,” he explained.
