Education Ministry rebuts claims President Mahama has abandoned Haruna Iddrisu

The Ministry of Education has strongly rejected claims that President John Dramani Mahama has abandoned Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu amid challenges in Ghana’s education sector.

The Minister's Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, described the claim by former Manhyia North MP Collins Owusu Amankwah as “factually wrong, politically convenient and completely unsupported by the evidence.”

In a statement issued on his Facebook account onWednesday, September 9, 2026, Mohammed said attempts to link difficulties with the 2026 Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) to a lack of presidential support were an attempt to create a political narrative that did not reflect the facts.

“The CSSPS is working,” he stated.

According to Mohammed, the government inherited a placement system with “significant weaknesses” and has chosen to reform it rather than abandon it.

“What the Ministry is doing is not abandoning the system but reforming and strengthening it to correct longstanding weaknesses and improve the experience of students, parents and schools,” he said.

He pointed to the decentralisation of placement resolution centres as one of the measures being introduced to make it easier for parents and students to resolve placement concerns.

Mohammed also insisted that Mahama remains firmly behind Iddrisu and the reforms being undertaken at the Ministry.

“President John Dramani Mahama did not appoint Hon. Haruna Iddrisu to fail. He appointed him to fix problems. And he is supporting him to do exactly that,” he said.

He further cited government efforts to address infrastructure deficits, expand school capacity and improve access to teaching and learning materials.

Aiming at the former MP’s criticism, Mohammed warned against turning challenges in national programmes into political attacks.

“Political commentary must not become political fiction,” he said.

He maintained that the Education Minister is “being supported, not isolated,” while the CSSPS is “being improved, not abandoned.”

“President Mahama remains firmly behind the Education Minister,” Mohammed concluded.
