Emotions take over as PRESEC clinches 9th NSMQ victory in fierce battle with Augusco, Blɛoo Boys

Emotions took over as Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon) clinched its ninth National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) trophy, becoming the only school in the history of the competition to achieve the feat.

The Legon-based school secured the historic victory in the 2026 NSMQ finals after a thrilling battle against St Augustine’s College, popularly known as Augusco, and Accra Academy, the Bl3oo Boys.

The Ɔdadeɛ Boys began their celebrations in Round Four when the final riddle was being read.

At the time, PRESEC had secured 34 points and added an extra three points to move to 37, before the final riddle of the round was presented.

Accra Academy had mounted a strong challenge in Round Four, moving to 33 points and leaving just a four-point gap between them and PRESEC. St Augustine’s College, meanwhile, had 27 points.

Under the rules of the final riddle, a correct answer on the first clue earns five points, the second clue earns four points, while an answer from any subsequent clue earns three points.

With Accra Academy needing to close the four-point gap, the Bl3oo Boys failed to provide the correct answer after the first and second clues.

This gave PRESEC a decisive advantage and sparked early celebrations among the Ɔdadeɛ Boys.

PRESEC eventually answered the final riddle correctly, identifying the answer as “Mercury”, to secure victory with 40 points.

The players could not hide their joy. They embraced one another on stage as the Quiz Mistress delivered the words, “You’re right,” confirming their answer and sealing their historic ninth NSMQ triumph.

PRESEC had started the competition on the back foot, finishing the opening round with nine points, while St Augustine’s College and Accra Academy were tied on 11 points.

In the second round, PRESEC began to close the gap. The Ɔdadeɛ Boys added eight points to move to 17, drawing level with St Augustine’s, while Accra Academy moved to 14 points.

The turning point came in Round Three, the Problem of the Day.

PRESEC picked up four more points to take its tally to 21, while St Augustine’s remained on 17 and Accra Academy stayed on 14.
