John Jinapor engages vice chancellors on renewable energy for public universities

Energy and Green Transition Minister, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has engaged Vice Chancellors of universities in Ghana to explore opportunities for stronger collaboration between industry and academia in support of the country’s energy transition and broader economic transformation.

In a post on his official Facebook page on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, Dr Jinapor said the discussions focused on the critical role of research, innovation and knowledge exchange in advancing Ghana’s green transition.

He said a key area of discussion was the government’s commitment to expanding the use of renewable energy across public universities.

According to the Minister, the government intends to provide solar power systems for academic facilities at public universities to enable them to meet their electricity needs through renewable energy.

“This will be complemented by the installation of all-in-one solar-powered streetlights across university campuses,” he added.

Dr Jinapor reiterated that Ghana’s universities have an important role to play in the country’s energy transition and said the government would continue to create an enabling environment for academia to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s energy future.
