The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has begun discussions with chiefs and leaders of Zongo communities across the country on plans to redevelop the communities and improve the living conditions of residents.
The initiative, according to the sector minister, Mahama Ayariga, will initially focus on communities in the Greater Accra Region, particularly Nima, Mamobi and their surrounding areas.
Speaking at the Zongo Chiefs Conference held on September 10, 2026, under the theme, “The Zongo Development Agenda,” Ayariga said the redevelopment programme was intended to transform the lives of residents rather than displace them.
He explained that the government was interested in “raising the value of Zongo communities, improving infrastructure and creating better economic opportunities for residents while allowing them to remain in their communities.”
The minister said any redevelopment programme that sought to remove residents from their homes without providing a sustainable alternative would defeat the purpose of the initiative.

According to him, the government’s vision is to redevelop Zongo communities in a way that enables residents to benefit directly from improved infrastructure and economic opportunities.
The m inister disclosed that he had engaged the youth, assembly officials and other stakeholders during a recent visit to Mamobi to better understand the challenges facing the community.
He also commended the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, for expressing his commitment to supporting efforts to transform Nima, Mamobi and its surroundings.
Ayariga said the government would work closely with chiefs, religious leaders and youth leaders and other stakeholders to address challenges relating to youth development, women's empowerment and infrastructure.
He stressed that the redevelopment agenda must benefit the people living in the communities and should not result in their displacement.
The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, also called for greater attention to the socio-economic challenges confronting young people in Zongo communities.
He identified unemployment, poverty, exclusion and hopelessness as major factors that could expose young people to crime, drug abuse, violence and extremism.
The Ga Mantse urged authorities and traditional leaders to focus on creating opportunities for young people before they lose hope.
He called for the Zongo development agenda to include skills training, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship programmes, access to finance, sports development, digital skills, mentorship, career guidance, leadership development and employment partnerships with the private sector.
King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II said society must move beyond complaining about the challenges facing the youth and instead invest in their future.
