We rejected MTN's GH¢20m donation to protect Ghana's dignity – NDC communicator

NDC communicator Hajia Alimatu Issahak has defended the government’s decision to reject a GH¢20 million donation from MTN Ghana to support the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.

She said the decision was not driven by a lack of need for financial support but by concerns about national dignity and the circumstances that led to the evacuation.

According to Hajia Issahak, MTN, which originated in South Africa, should have focused on calling for an end to the attacks on foreigners in the country instead of offering money to Ghana.

“MTN is from South Africa and if they had any advice, they should have given it to their nation to stop the attacks on foreigners instead of just bringing us money,” she said.

She stressed that Ghana should not accept financial assistance simply because it was facing difficulties, arguing that national pride must also be considered in such circumstances.

“We will not just accept any money. National pride and dignity are very important,” she stated.

Hajia Issahak further cited a local saying to explain the government’s position, saying the country’s difficult circumstances should not compel it to accept every form of assistance.

“There is a saying that the fact that you are hungry doesn’t mean you just drink from any cup,” she said.

Her comments come amid public debate over the government’s expenditure on the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa and its decision to reject the MTN donation.

The Minority in Parliament has questioned aspects of the evacuation, including the amount spent by the government.

The government has maintained that the evacuation was necessary to protect Ghanaians caught up in the attacks in South Africa.
