GOPDC expands community development to football, launches talent hunt for youth in Eastern Region

The Ghana Oil Palm Development Company (GOPDC) has broadened its corporate social responsibility scope by introducing sports development to its traditional areas of focus, with a primary mission to discover and nurture young football talents in its operational communities.

Speaking on the new initiative, Christopher Asiedu, the Community Relations Officer at GOPDC, explained that while the company’s community support has historically centered on health, education, and livelihoods, sports has now been integrated as a vital pillar for youth engagement.

According to Christopher Asiedu, the decision to incorporate sports was inspired by the overwhelming display of raw talent witnessed during an under-15 inter-school football competition sponsored by the company last year. That pilot event brought together eight schools, with GOPDC providing jerseys, football boots, equipment, and other sporting materials.

The success of that event spurred management to create a broader platform for youth in the surrounding areas. Christopher Asiedu noted that structured sporting activities not only keep young people active and foster positive social bonds, but also shield them from negative influences such as drug abuse.

As part of the rollout, GOPDC has mapped out 12 catchment communities, with plans to feature eight of them in the ongoing tournament. Preliminary matches are already underway, involving an initial four communities before expanding to the rest.

To sustain the momentum, GOPDC has pledged continued support for the participating teams. The ultimate winner, along with the second- and third-placed teams, will receive attractive prizes, including jerseys, footballs, and boots at the conclusion of the tournament, which is being held at the Kwae Estate in the Eastern Region.

Also addressing stakeholders at the event, Giedon Ahamah, Health, Safety and Environmental Officer at GOPDC, commended community leaders and organizers for rallying behind the programme. He noted that the tournament serves a dual purpose: fostering grassroots unity and providing a much-needed stage for underprivileged youths to showcase their athletic abilities.

"Many young people possess considerable sporting talents but lack the necessary opportunities, support, and platforms to develop their abilities," Giedon Ahamah remarked. He emphasized that GOPDC’s initiative is designed to bridge this gap by identifying promising players and connecting them with individuals and institutions capable of advancing their careers.

Stressing that the grassroots remain the beating heart of Ghanaian football, Giedon Ahamah called on the government and key stakeholders in the nation’s sports sector to direct more attention and resources toward rural talent development.

"Talent identification should not be limited to major towns and cities," he argued. "Scouting young players from villages and smaller communities will help Ghana discover more exceptional footballers capable of representing the country on the international stage in the future."
