'Ghana fast becoming a cocaine coast' – Ntim Fordjour demands probe into drug busts

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has warned that Ghana risks becoming a “COCAINE COAST” amid a series of major international drug seizures linked to shipments originating from the country.

The Assin South MP is demanding urgent government action and a full-scale inquiry into what he describes as an unprecedented drug trafficking crisis that is threatening Ghana’s international reputation.

In a social media post on September 11, 2026, Rev Ntim Fordjour questioned the government’s response to recent drug seizures, particularly the alleged involvement of public officials in some of the cases.

“Ghana is fast becoming a COCAINE COAST under government complicity,” he stated.

He recalled raising concerns in April 2025 over what he described as a $500 million cocaine shipment and suspicious flights, arguing that his allegations were not properly investigated.

“I raised alarm on the $500m cocaine and suspicious flights in April 2025. Instead of the government investigating the matter and prosecuting the culprits, the govt chose to storm my house with armed thugs under the supervision of BNI,” he wrote.

The Member of Parliament also cited the seizure of about $208 million worth of methamphetamine in Australia in April 2026, which Australian authorities linked to a shipment from Ghana.

According to Rev Ntim Fordjour, the Interior Minister subsequently told Parliament that government officials were complicit in the matter. He, however, questioned why no official had been publicly named or prosecuted since the disclosure.

“In April 2026, $208m worth of meth narcotics was busted in Australia from Ghana. The Interior Minister indicated to Parliament that government officials were complicit yet, no government official has since being named nor prosecuted,” he said.

His latest concerns follow the seizure in France of nearly 3.9 metric tonnes of cocaine with an estimated street value of about €225 million, or roughly $260 million, at the northern port of Dunkirk.

The cocaine was concealed in a container of plastic waste that arrived from Ghana, with part of the shipment reportedly destined for Antwerp.

Rev Ntim Fordjour argued that the latest seizure adds to a worrying pattern of major drug consignments being intercepted abroad after leaving Ghana.

“And now, another major drug bust of $260m worth of cocaine from Ghana has been intercepted in France. In less than 2 years under the NDC Mahama government, over $1billion unprecedented worth of drugs have been busted in and out of our ports and yet no government official has been fired for their failure,” he stated.

He further questioned whether the repeated seizures point to deliberate facilitation of the narcotics trade or serious failures within Ghana’s security and port-control systems.

“Is the government directly facilitating these narcotics transits or benefiting from the trade, for which they have failed to take steps to disincentivize drug trafficking?” he asked.

The opposition lawmaker is therefore calling for a comprehensive investigation involving key institutions responsible for Ghana’s security, ports, immigration and narcotics control.

“We demand answers and full scale enquiry to be commissioned immediately. Minister for Interior, Minister for Transport, Narcotics Control Commission, Ghana Immigration Service, BNI etc cannot escape answers and accountability,” he said.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour warned that the continued international seizure of large quantities of narcotics linked to Ghana could have serious consequences for the country’s reputation and international standing.

“This level of drug trafficking is unprecedented in our history. Ghana’s sinking image must be salvaged quickly before degenerating into a COCAINE COAST!” he added.
