Alexandra Tay targets senior-team chance after U-20 World Cup experience

Black Princesses defender Alexandra Tay is hoping her experience at the U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland can strengthen her case for another call-up to Ghana's senior team, Black Queens.

Tay, who is featuring at her second U-20 World Cup, has already made the step up to the Black Queens, having represented Ghana at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

The centre-back is now looking to use her time in Poland to continue developing ahead of a possible place in Ghana's squad for the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027 play-off tournament.

Ghana are among six teams set to compete in the preliminary phase of the tournament, alongside Chinese Taipei, Ecuador, Papua New Guinea, South Africa and Uzbekistan.

The preliminary phase will take place between November and December, with each team playing three matches. The top two sides will progress to the final phase.

Tay believes the quality of opposition at the U-20 World Cup will provide valuable preparation for the challenges ahead at senior level.

"Any time you get the opportunity to play in a tournament with such a high level of competition to build your performances and qualities, I think that is really helpful for us [to prepare]," Tay told FIFA.

The defender is also expected to be in action when the Black Princesses face France in their final Group C game later today at the Arena Sosnowiec, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

Victory against France would therefore secure a historic place in the knockout phase and mark a significant milestone for the Black Princesses.

Ghana have appeared at every edition of the U-20 Women's World Cup since 2008 but have never progressed beyond the group stage.
