Nations FC have been eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup after a 1-1 draw with FC Diarra in the second leg of their preliminary-round tie at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The MTN FA Cup holders went into the game needing to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit and dominated possession for much of the contest, creating several opportunities as they pushed for a comeback.

However, FC Diarra scored first to put Nations in a difficult position before the Ghanaian side responded with an equaliser.

Nations continued to push for the decisive goal but could not find the breakthrough needed to turn the tie around.

The draw means FC Diarra progress 2-1 on aggregate, ending Nations FC’s first CAF Confederation Cup campaign at the preliminary-round stage.

Nations’ elimination also brings Ghana’s continental campaign to an early end.

Medeama had already been knocked out of the CAF Champions League after losing 4-1 on aggregate to TP Mazembe, leaving both of Ghana’s representatives eliminated before the group stage.

The early exits once again raise concerns about the performance of Ghanaian clubs in continental competition, with the country now left without representation in either of CAF’s two major inter-club competitions.
