Alan Kyerematen vows to break NPP-NDC duopoly

Founder and leader of the United Party (UP), Alan Kyerematen, has renewed his call for an alternative political force to break the dominance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ghana’s politics.

Kyerematen said he remained determined to challenge the two-party system, arguing that more than three decades of alternating NPP and NDC governments had not produced the level of development Ghana could have achieved.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, he said the country continued to grapple with challenges that should have been substantially addressed after 34 years of constitutional rule.

“I am still determined to break the NPP and NDC duopoly and I am even sure if I didn’t have the strength and willpower, God would have given it to me because these two parties are the cause of our problems in this country,” he stated.

Kyerematen cited poor roads, unstable electricity supply and delays in development projects as examples of persistent challenges under successive NPP and NDC administrations.

He said Ghana could have made greater progress if governments had been able to sustain and build on development initiatives instead of allowing changes in administration to affect continuity.

“But after 34 years, our roads are bad, and we don’t have stable electricity. We’re still struggling with developmental projects. We could have done better by now,” he indicated.

He pointed to China’s rapid transformation over roughly three decades as an example of the level of progress he believes sustained development policies can deliver.

“It took China 30 years to become the second most powerful country in the world, but when you look at it critically, their transformation in a way makes them number one,” he said.
