Akosua Manu raises alarm over arrest of Salomey Baffoe

Advisor on Gender and Social Protection to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Akosua Manu, has raised concerns over the reported arrest of Salomey Awity Baffoe, a mother of three, in connection with investigations into anonymous social media commentator “Ghana Jollof”.

Manu said the circumstances surrounding Baffoe's reported arrest were troubling, particularly because her family was reportedly unable to establish which state institution had taken her or where she was being held.

In a Facebook post on September 16, 2026, she said the incident could not simply be normalised as an arrest without clear information from the state.

"When individuals reportedly arrive at a woman's home around midnight, identify themselves as security operatives, take her away, and her family is subsequently unable to establish with certainty which state institution is holding her or where she has been taken, we are confronting something far more troubling," she said.

According to Manu, Baffoe's family reportedly sought information from security institutions but could not establish her whereabouts, while regional Police and National Security officials were said to have indicated that they had no record of the operation.

She therefore called for the immediate disclosure of Baffoe's whereabouts, the identity of the agency holding her, if any, and the legal basis for her detention.

"A citizen cannot simply disappear into the custody of unidentified persons and have her family left searching from one security institution to another," Manu stated.

She said the reported incident was also a gender and social protection issue because Baffoe is a mother of three, raising concerns about what happens to children when a primary caregiver is suddenly removed from the household.

Manu further criticised the circulation of photographs of women on social media alongside speculation about their possible connection to the anonymous commentator known as “Ghana Jollof”.

She stressed that suspicion and social media speculation should not be treated as evidence, insisting that law enforcement must establish a credible connection before depriving anyone of their liberty.

While acknowledging the state’s responsibility to investigate suspected offences, Manu said security operations must remain within constitutional limits.

She called for stronger safeguards governing the arrest and detention of women, particularly primary caregivers, and urged the relevant security agency to account publicly for the circumstances surrounding Baffoe’s reported removal.

“If there is credible evidence that she has committed an offence, let the law take its course through the proper constitutional processes. But if there is no lawful basis for holding her, let this mother go home to her children,” she said.
