UK Trade Commissioner for Africa visits Ghana to deepen trade and investment ties

His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC) for Africa, Alastair Long, is visiting Ghana for the first time since taking up his role.

His visit coincides with the 10th anniversary of the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC), which is being marked with the annual UK-Ghana Trade and Investment Summit.

Long is expected to meet government officials, British businesses and innovators as part of engagements aimed at strengthening trade, investment, innovation and economic cooperation between Ghana and the United Kingdom.

“I am delighted to visit Ghana for the first time as His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Africa. Ghana is an important trade and investment partner for the UK, and I look forward to strengthening our commercial relationship further,” Long said.

He said the UKGCC had played an important role in bringing businesses from both countries together and creating opportunities for trade and investment.

“The UK Ghana Chamber of Commerce has played a valuable role over the last decade in bringing businesses together and creating opportunities for growth and investment,” he said.

“As the Chamber marks its tenth anniversary, we celebrate its contribution and look ahead to the next chapter of UK-Ghana collaboration.”

During his visit, Long will also travel to Kumasi, where he is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, Mamponghene, representing Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

He will also visit the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to participate in the launch of the Ghana Photonics & Optics Laboratory, which received support from the UK Government.

At KNUST, he is expected to meet the Pro Vice-Chancellor to discuss opportunities for collaboration between Ghana and the UK in research, innovation, skills development and investment.

The visit is also expected to highlight the UK-Ghana Growth Partnership, which provides a framework for strengthening economic cooperation, increasing investment and creating opportunities for businesses in both countries.

Executive Director of the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce, Adjoba Kyiamah, said the Chamber’s 10th anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on its contribution to the business relationship between the two countries.

“As we mark ten years of the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce, we reflect with pride on a decade of fostering meaningful partnerships, facilitating investment and creating opportunities for businesses in both Ghana and the United Kingdom,” she said.

Deputy British High Commissioner, Chris Halliday, said the Chamber had been an important partner in strengthening commercial ties between Ghana and the UK.

“The UK Ghana Chamber of Commerce has been an invaluable partner in advancing commercial ties between our two countries,” he said.

He added that the UK remained committed to strengthening trade and investment links with Ghana and supporting sustainable economic growth.
