Dutch court throws out OK Frimpong's bail applications

A court in the Netherlands has reportedly thrown out bail applications by the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong (OK Frimpong), who is facing extradition to the United States over allegations that he engaged in romance fraud.

According to the Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who provided the latest update on the case, the court first dismissed the substantive bail application of the embattled MP.

He added that an appeal filed by the Asante Akyem North legislator was also rejected by a Dutch court.

"He is still in custody. He's still in the hands of the Dutch government in Amsterdam. We have done two applications, one substantive, one appeal for his bail, but they all got refused," he said.

Dafeamekpor went on to say that Parliament of Ghana was now preparing for the substantive hearing, where the court would determine whether he should be extradited to the US to answer to the crimes he is accused of.

He disclosed that the extradition hearing is scheduled to start on November 18, 2026.

OK Frimpong was arrested by Dutch authorities at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam in May 2026 after travelling from Ghana. Parliament confirmed his detention on May 12, saying it was engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to obtain details about the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

The arrest was linked to an extradition request from the United States. According to Frimpong’s lawyer, a warrant had reportedly been issued by a magistrate court in Illinois at the request of US authorities. The lawyer said the warrant was for Frimpong’s extradition for questioning and did not contain formal criminal charges against him.

Subsequent reports have linked the investigation to allegations of fraud, money laundering and romance scams. The allegations have not been established in court, and Frimpong remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
