Dr Kofi Akamani, a US-based Ghanaian lecturer’s final conversation with his family in Ghana was on the evening of Friday, 18 September 2026, during a conference call that was meant to discuss a family funeral.

According to a myjoyonline.com news report, at about 6 p.m., members of the Akamani family connected by phone to consider whether to send a delegation to a funeral in Biu, near Navrongo in the Upper East Region.

Four family members actively participated in the discussion, while others listened in. Among them was Kofi, who joined the call from the United States.

As the conversation drew to a close, Kofi said goodbye to the family and wished those who would be travelling a safe journey.

At the time, no one knew they were hearing him for what would be one of their final conversations with him.

According to the report, one of his sisters noticed something unusual about him that evening. Kofi, whom the family knew as loud, expressive and willing to engage freely in conversations, appeared unusually quiet.

His speech and responses were also slower than they normally were.

The change was noticeable but there was nothing to suggest to the family that it would be their last evening speaking with him.

The following day, Saturday, 19 September, Kofi was shot in the United States and later pronounced dead. He was 48.

Following an investigation into the incident, JCSO said Akamani’s wife, 35-year-old Betty Akamani, was arrested in connection with the shooting and faces multiple charges over her alleged involvement.
